Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) discovered the exact same theory of evolution as Darwin did. When he wrote to Darwin about the discovery, it pushed Darwin to finally "go public" about his findings; first, together with Wallace at the Linnean Society in 1858 and then on his own in his famous book, The Origin of Species (1859). 2021-04-17 · Suffering from a terrible bout of nausea, Darwin, now 50, was secreted away at a spa on the desolate Yorkshire moors when the book was sold to the trade on November 22, 1859. He still feared the worst and sent copies to the experts with self-effacing letters (“how you will long to crucify me alive”).
